Portfolio content

Your portfolio is a portrait of you. It is the electronic resume you will present to prospective employers. It must describe you in a professional and concise manner.

At a minimum, your portfolio should include pages that describe

  • Schooling
  • Work Experience
  • Leadership Experience
  • Organizations
  • Community Involvement

...and if you feel that you are short on information for now, you can always add personal things, but consider this information temporary. You will remove it before you are ready to interview for a job.

  • Hobbies
  • Pets
  • Sports

Keep in mind that a professional look is best. Chose you colors carefully, avoid blinking, flashing, and the like, and always list information in ways that will impress.

What is a Portfolio?

A professional portfolio is generally a collection of artifacts designed to celebrate and reflect on achievements. A portfolio should:

  • clearly articulate and track accomplishments in and outside the classroom;
  • draw connections among their experiences and achievements;  record experiences they might otherwise forget or undervalue for later inclusion in a resume or presentation for employers or graduate schools;
  • increase their levels of self-understanding and confidence; see patterns emerging in their areas of study and interest, which will help them take fuller advantage of their opportunities in NIACC's IT Programs and  elsewhere;
  • bring a greater clarity of purpose and a higher level of motivation to the classroom;
  • demonstrate their competencies and capabilities as they pursue internships, leadership positions on campus and in the community, and field-based study or research experiences; demonstrate competency with a wide range of computer-based and multimedia technologies;
  • be more proactive than reactive in designing their educational plans and in pursuing post-graduate opportunities; and,
  • be able to better substantiate their decisions and choices.
